Your website speaks to humans. But does it speak to machines?

When ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overview look for information about your business, they don’t “read” your website the way a patient or customer would. They scan the code looking for structured data — information tagged in a standardized format called Schema.org.

If your website doesn’t contain these tags, AI systems have to guess what you are, where you are, and what you offer. And when an AI has to guess, it prefers to recommend a competitor whose website gives it clear answers.

The result is measurable: websites that properly implement structured data are cited 2 to 3 times more often by AI engines than those without. And you don’t need to know how to code to benefit from it.

What Is Schema.org, in Simple Terms?

Imagine your website is a shop. The visible content (text, photos, design) is the storefront and interior — it’s what the customer sees. Schema.org is the digital identity card stuck on the back of the shop, the one only machines read.

This card says, in a standardized language: “I am a dental practice. My address is 12 Convention Street, Paris 15th. I’m open Monday to Saturday from 9 AM to 7 PM. My services include implantology, orthodontics, and dental whitening. My average rating is 4.7 out of 5 based on 185 reviews. Dr. Sophie Martin practices here as a dental surgeon.”

In technical terms, this information is encoded in JSON-LD — a format that Google officially recommends and that all AI systems understand. The code is placed in the header of your web page, invisible to human visitors, but perfectly readable by machines.

Schema.org is the common vocabulary created in 2011 by Google, Microsoft (Bing), Yahoo, and Yandex. It now contains over 800 different content types — from restaurants to doctors, products to events. It has become the universal language of structured data on the web.

Why It’s Become Essential in 2026

Until recently, structured data was a “bonus” for search optimization — a way to get attractive rich results on Google (review stars, hours displayed directly in results). It was an advantage, not a necessity.

In 2026, everything has changed. The two largest search engines in the world — Google and Microsoft — have publicly confirmed that structured data is a critical signal for their AI features. ChatGPT has also confirmed using structured data to determine which results to display.

The Schema Types That Matter for Your Business

You don’t need to implement all 800 Schema.org types. For a local business, here are the priority types, ranked by impact.

For a Dental Practice

Dentist (critical priority) — The main schema. It includes the practice name, address, GPS coordinates, phone number, website, opening hours, services offered, and average review rating. This is the complete identity card that AI systems consult first.

MedicalOrganization — Complements the Dentist schema with specific medical information: medical specialties, available services, network affiliation.

Person (for each practitioner) — Name, professional title, specialties, languages spoken. AI systems increasingly look for “person” entities to personalize their recommendations (“Dr. Martin specializes in implantology”).

FAQPage — Structured questions and answers. This is the schema type with the strongest impact on AI citations, because it directly matches the question-and-answer format of AI assistants.

For a Restaurant

Restaurant — Name, address, cuisine type, price range, hours, average rating. This is the restaurant equivalent of the Dentist schema.

Menu and MenuItem — The details of your menu, structured by sections (starters, mains, desserts) with prices. AI systems use this data to answer queries like “Italian restaurant with vegetarian dishes in the Marais.”

FAQPage — Same impact as for dental practices: structured frequently asked questions (“Do you accept group reservations?”, “Do you have a terrace?”) directly feed AI responses.

For a Hotel

Hotel or LodgingBusiness — Name, address, star rating, amenities, price range.

AggregateOffer — Room price range with availability.

FAQPage — Questions about parking, breakfast, cancellation, proximity to public transport.

For All Businesses

BreadcrumbList — Your website’s navigation structure, which helps AI understand how your pages are organized.

WebSite with SearchAction — Tells AI systems that your site has an internal search function.

AggregateRating — Your average rating and number of reviews, pulled from Google or another platform.

How to Check if Your Website Already Has Schema

Before implementing anything, check what already exists on your site. It’s simple and free.

Method 1: Google’s Rich Results Test. Go to search.google.com/test/rich-results and enter your website URL. Google will analyze the page and show you the schema types detected, any errors, and missed opportunities.

Method 2: The Schema.org Validator. Go to validator.schema.org and paste your page URL. This tool details all schema types present and flags missing properties.

Method 3: Manually in the code. On any page of your website, right-click then “View Page Source.” Search (Ctrl+F) for the text “application/ld+json.” If you find code blocks containing this term, your site has Schema. If you find nothing, it doesn’t.

If the result is “no Schema detected” — which is the case for the majority of local business websites — you have a significant improvement opportunity.

How to Implement Schema Without Knowing How to Code

This is the crucial point. You’re not a developer, and you don’t need to be. Here are three paths to implementing structured data, from simplest to most complete.

Path 1: Plugins and Built-in Tools (If You Have WordPress)

If your site runs on WordPress, several plugins handle Schema automatically. The most widely used are Yoast SEO (premium version — automatically generates Article, Organization, FAQ, and BreadcrumbList schemas), Rank Math (free version — includes a very intuitive visual Schema generator), and Schema Pro (a dedicated plugin that covers all schema types with a no-code interface).

These plugins let you fill in visual forms (name, address, hours, services) and automatically generate the corresponding JSON-LD code. No line of code to write.

Path 2: Online Generators (For Any Type of Site)

If your site isn’t on WordPress, or if you want to generate Schema manually to pass it to a webmaster, use an online generator. Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake 1: Adding Schema that doesn’t match the visible content. If your Schema says “open on Saturday” but your website displays “closed on weekends,” AI systems detect this inconsistency and lose trust. The Schema must exactly reflect what’s on the page.

Mistake 2: Overloading with irrelevant schema types. Adding Product schema to a medical services page creates confusion. Only use types that match your actual content.

Mistake 3: Implementing once and forgetting. If your hours change (vacation, new Saturday slot), your Schema must be updated at the same time as your site and your Google listing. Inconsistency between Schema and other sources is worse than having no Schema at all.

Mistake 4: Using the Microdata format instead of JSON-LD. Google officially recommends JSON-LD. It’s the format all AI systems prefer because it’s separate from the HTML code and therefore easier to analyze. Insist with your provider on JSON-LD.

When ChatGPT looks for information about dentists in the 15th arrondissement, instead of having to interpret the text of your homepage to understand that you’re a dentist, that you’re in the 15th, and that you offer implants — it finds this information directly tagged and verifiable. Doubt disappears. Trust increases. The probability of being cited increases.

When Google AI Overview generates a response about Italian restaurants in the Marais, the data from your Restaurant schema (cuisine type, price range, hours, terrace) is directly usable without interpretation. Is Schema.org free?

Yes. Schema.org is an open and free standard. The vocabulary, testing tools, and online generators cost nothing. The only potential costs are related to technical implementation if you use a provider (typically $200 to $500 for a simple site) or a premium WordPress plugin (about $50 to $100 per year).

My site is on Wix/Squarespace/Carrd. Can I add Schema?

Wix and Squarespace allow you to add custom code in the page header, which makes adding JSON-LD possible. Carrd also offers this option in its paid plans. The simplest platforms (Facebook pages, booking platform profiles) don’t allow Schema to be added, but that’s normal — Schema is intended for your own website.

If I don’t have a website, is Schema useful?

No, Schema only applies to websites. If you don’t have a site, focus your efforts on your Google Business Profile listing (which contains its own structured data managed by Google) and on your booking platform and review site profiles. Schema becomes relevant when you create a website, even a minimal one.

How long before AI systems take my Schema into account?

Google typically detects new structured data within 1 to 2 weeks during its next indexing pass. The effects on AI visibility (citations in ChatGPT, Perplexity) take a bit longer — typically 2 to 4 weeks — because these platforms update their sources at varying frequencies. Schema is an investment that produces continuous effects once in place.

Can Schema harm my site if poorly implemented?
